Today sees the start of a new Challenge over at A Vintage Journey and this time Sara Emily is our host . Her chosen theme is
Against the Grain
"Most of us love the look of wood and there are a lot of art/craft products out there that help us achieve beautiful wood grain, including stamps, stencils, embossing folders, papers and mixed media products. We would love to see how you add a touch of wood texture or appearance to your vintage, shabby, mixed media, art journalling, industrial, timeworn or steampunk projects "
Having been M.I.A from the last few AVJ challenges I am happy to be back today with a contribution for Sara Emily's challenge.
I have used woodgrain cardstock, a woodgrain embossing folder, wood chips and a wood panel to create a mini Art Plaque. And what could be more ideal nestled amongst all that woodgrain than a few of natures beautiful butterflies!
As the challenge theme is all about woodgrain I thought I would use a wood panel as my base. So a quick routle around my mountainous stash of wooden/ mdf bits and pieces unearthed an ideal piece!
I painted the panel with black Acrylic paint and then covered the front with wooden slats that I created using Tim Holtz Woodgrain Cardstock, Tim Holtz Distress paints: Walnut Stain, Ground Espresso, Black Soot and a sanding block.
The butterfly came courtesy of Tim Holtz bigz die: Tattered Butterfly. I coloured it with PaperArtsy Fresco Finish paint: Stone and then to give it a wood grain effect I embossed it using Tim Holtz Embossing Folder: Woodgrain. The wood grain embossing is highlighted with a distress crayon: Ground Espresso
The smaller butterfly was stamped using one of the many butterflies on Tim Holtz stampset: Flutter. I think this particular one is my most used ... guess that must make it my favourite then but shhhh don't tell the others!! As far as they know I love them all the same!!
It was coloured with distress inks and given a glossy coat thanks to some Glossy Accents.
The butterflies were adhered together at the thorax and placed in situ on a double wood chip mount.
They were framed with a crackled square die cut and surrounded by a 'wild and free' array of sisal fibres.
By doubling up the butterflies like I have it not only added an additional woodgrain effect to my project but it also added some colour and some wonderful dimension.
A Tim Holtz Clippings sticker provided a fitting sentiment and finishing touch.

I love how three of the Creative Guides have used wood grain card stock and came up with such amazing diverse looks! Yours is so rich and dark -- just the way I like it -- and brought to life/light with your crackled frame, shabby 'wood' butterfly and that stunning colorful (favorite) butterfly at the center of it all. DeleteUnbelievably beautiful, Amanda... from the wood plank background (mounted on a real wooden panel, no less!) to the gorgeous butterfly via the stunning crackled frame and all those textural fibres, this is a new favourite for me. Stunning!
