All Aboard- A Vintage Journey March 2017 Challenge

Today we launch our new Challenge over at A Vintage Journey. Lovely Brenda is our host this month and her chosen challenge is
ALL ABOARD-HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVJ !

'Come join in our All Aboard Challenge where you can choose what you want to step on board with and although we still need to see you working with the styles and genres listed in the banner at the top of the page you can choose whether you share a card, some altered art, a journal page, a painting. infact whatever you fancy but with no theme to follow . Lets have some fun , share our current creations and enjoy the informal feel of our birthday celebrations.'

To celebrate our birthday and the passing of time since A Vintage Journey began 3 years ago I have created a fully functional faux metal clock.

The body of the clock is created using Eileen Hull Box Square (ATB) die with mountboard. Once die cut, all pieces were primed with gesso and painted with Tim Holtz Distress paint.

The Mirror board panels were cut to fit each of the sides (including top and bottom) of the ATB. The panels were then altered using one of Tim Holtz new release Texture fade - Numeric and Tim's painted industrial technique. 3 of the panels were placed in one area of the embossing folder, 3 in a different area to achieve a variation in pattern .

The embossed panels were adhered to the ATB pieces and before assembling the ATB a hole was punched out of the centre of what would be the face of the clock. This would allow for the clock mechanism to be fitted securely.

The 'lid' of the ATB was left so it would open and close to allow for easy access to fit and replace the battery when needed. The internal area could also be used to store spare batteries or any other 'bits' you may want to keep safe.

The clock face was created using Tim Holtz Gadget Gears Bigz die, greyboard, mirror board , distress paint and Texture fade emboss folder - Numeric .

Chunky Inconal hex nuts were used for feet

and one of Tim Holtz Ideology Faucet knobs was adhered to a Iconal hex nut to create a knob/ handle

which would enable the 'lid' of the clock to be opened and closed with greater ease.

Then it was just a case of cutting the hands down to size, fitting them in place and of course making sure the clock works......
Is there a low pitched tick tock? Does the second hand move?
Yay! There is and it does .

I really enjoyed making this clock

'Think Pink'- Guest Designer at Stamps and Stencils

Hello Everyone and Welcome

Hope you are all doing ok and having a great week so far. 

Today I am a Guest designer over at Stamps and Stencils having been fortunate enough to be their Challenge winner in April for my 'Spring is in the Air' altered canvas (if you missed it it can be seen here) and I really am thrilled and honoured to have been given such a wonderful opportunity to share some of my creativity on such a fabulous blog that has a very talented design team. 

With most of the details about my project over on Stamps and Stencils blog  I'll just take you on a quick tour around my project including a little story about a photo I have used.

When I learned that Stamps and Stencils challenge theme this month, hosted by Branka, was 

'Think Pink'

I couldn't help but smile! If I'm honest I laughed out loud! It had my name written all over it- literally!!
Hahaha! 

So there really was only one way I could go with this challenge I thought- and that was to make something that had a little bit of 'me' in it, on it or about it!
Here's what I made - a 5x7 inch altered canvas using tones of pink and an old school photo of a little girl (me) called Pink! 
Looks like butter wouldn't melt doesn't it with those eyes and that smile ....mwahhhh!  

 

So lets start with the canvas

 I do love the Tim Holtz dot fade stencil (it has been said that I can drive people dotty). There's also some lightly stenciled numbers. (Maths was my favourite subject at school, oh along with art of course) and some 'Hot Pink' paint splats (I love the carefree creativity of splats) 

 

I also added some crazing

cracks and nuts (me,crazy? cracked? nuts? hahaha I'll let you decide)

The photo is an old school photo, taken when I was about 8/9 that I resized and developed in black and white. I think of all my school photos its my favourite. However I'm sure my mum would beg to differ as she was,lets say a little disappointed that my hair wasn't in the the very neat and tidy 'a bit up and a bit down' style I left home with that morning! Well believe it or not the parting that looks like the 'hinds legs of a donkey' wasn't my fault even though that cheeky grin may suggest otherwise. It was indeed the fault of a boy in my class who en route to  pose for the camera decided it would be so funny if he ruffled up some of the girls hair and yes I was his main target!
Thanks Peter for making a memory that never fails to make me smile ! 

To finish off my 'Pink' canvas I added a personal wish and 'note to self .....'

and now for the arty shot

I thoroughly enjoyed creating this canvas and am really pleased with how it turned out. I really hope you like it too.

Industrial- A Vintage Journey- February 2016 Challenge

Hi Everyone  and Happy Friday 

Today over at A Vintage Journey it's the start of a New Challenge and this month Tracy has chosen the theme 'Industrial'. Here's what she has to say 

'Use your foil tape or metallic card stocks with your favourite texture fades/ embossing folders to create an Industrial creation all of your own. Whether its a background, bloom or anything, you don't have to limit your paint colour to black- The Industrial Technique looks great with all colours of paint!'

My kind of theme for sure and although I had a few ideas of potential projects I could make I decided to use this ideal opportunity to alter a box using Tim Holtz Industrial Technique. It's  something I have been meaning to do since I first began crafting but just never quite got around to. You know how it is - life just kept getting in the way!

So I sought out my set of three nesting boxes that I bought way back when and chose to use the middle size one of the three . 

 I gave the entire box (exterior and interior) with a coat of gesso and once dry a couple of coats of Back Soot Distress Paint 

I gathered the products I needed along with my painted box

 

and after measuring all the exterior surfaces of the box, excluding the base I  cut panels of Silver Mirror Board a few millimetres smaller than the actual measurements of the box and lid.  Now it was time to use Tim's Industrial technique. I repeated the technique until I was happy with the result.  

A  delicate application of Pewter and Silver gilding wax over the surfaces further enhanced the detail .

Now all that was left to do was adhere all the panels in place.  Ideally I would have liked all the panels to  match up but with this particular embossing folder it was near on impossible, so I had to settle for what Tim is always telling us to do and 'Embrace the Imperfection!' (not something I'm that good at - I've still got the jitters)

Although I know there are many ways I could have embellished my box it seemed a shame to cover up all the detailed embossing so I decided to leave it as is and instead make some compartments for the interior as I had been thinking whilst altering my box that I would use it to store all my 'metal crafty bits' i.e ideology, hex nuts, brads, wire ....... 

After measuring the width and length of the box interior I cut 5 panels to size from mount board and like with the box gave all sides and edges of the panels a coat of gesso and a coat of Black Soot distress paint before adhering in place to create 6 separate compartments

Here's a few photos of my Industrial Ideology box (sadly, not the best as it proved somewhat tricky photographing mirror board coupled with the poor light at this time of year) 

  

I have already started on a second box so that may make an appearance in the near future.  Watch this space.....
